Salt and Pepper Broccoli

Few weeks back we went to a restaurant, there i ordered salt and pepper prawns, that was the first time i tasted it and loved the cruchy prawns along with the onion, ginger and garlic. There were no sauces going in that. I loved the fact that the taste of prawns was dominating in the dish and not the sauces.

WHile it will taste good, deep frying broccoli takes out all the health benefits and makes it a very unhealthy dish.

FAQs

Should you salt the water when cooking broccoli? ›

Bring a pot of salted water to a boil. Add the broccoli florets and cook, uncovered, until tender, 2 to 3 minutes depending on the size of the florets.

Which cooking technique gives the best results when cooking broccoli? ›

Broccoli can be eaten raw, but blanching it quickly in boiling water helps give it a more crisp-tender texture and bring out its flavor.

How to make broccoli taste good without making it unhealthy? ›

Healthiest Way to Cook Broccoli

Lightly sauteed with garlic and a splash of water. It's that simple. Cooking broccoli in this way retains most of its colour, nutritional value along with that crunch that results in a delicious side dish that even my youngest and pickiest eater enjoys.

How long should broccoli be boiled? ›

To boil, place in a pan of boiling water and cook the florets for 6-8 minutes. To steam, place in a steamer over boiling water and cook for 6-8 minutes. Broccoli to be stir-fried should be separated into bite-sized florets, heat 1 tbsp of oil in a frying pan and add the florets, cook for 4-5 minutes or until tender.

What do you soak broccoli in before cooking? ›

Fill a large bowl with 2 ⅔ cups cold or warm water and ⅓ cup white vinegar. Allow it to soak for 2 minutes, then dump the broccoli into a colander. Rinse the vinegar-treated broccoli very well under running water.

What to put on top of broccoli? ›

Top with a little parmesan or low fat mozzarella. Sesame oil gives a distinctive Asian flavor, so this can make broccoli an ideal side with any Chinese or Thai inspired dish. You can also toss in some green or red bell pepper if you like.

Is it better to saute or boil broccoli? ›

Steaming broccoli is a fast and healthy way to cook this nutritious vegetable. It preserves broccoli's vibrant green color and fresh flavor without the addition of oil. While boiled broccoli is often soggy, steamed broccoli is characteristically crisp-tender.

What to add to broccoli for flavor? ›

Most often, I enjoy steamed broccoli as a healthy side dish. Before I serve it, I toss it with salt, pepper, olive oil, and a big squeeze of lemon juice so that it's nice and bright. It also tastes fantastic dressed with lemon vinaigrette, vegan ranch, honey mustard dressing, or romesco sauce.

What is the healthiest way to cook broccoli? ›

Blanching is a quick dip in boiling water, followed immediately by cooling. You can also preserve both nutrients and the enzyme needed to form protective isothiocyanates if you steam broccoli for three or four minutes (just until crisp-tender) or microwave for less than one minute.

Why does restaurant broccoli taste so good? ›

Many restaurants roast or pan-fry their vegetable side dishes in bacon, butter, or other animal fat – or a mixture of these. Why? Because it makes veggies taste richer, more flavorful, and saltier than they would if you cooked them at home, which encourages you and other customers to keep coming back for more.

Why is boiling broccoli not recommended? ›

Moreover, you should never boil cruciferous vegetables, including broccoli — not only does boiling often result in mushy and lackluster florets, it also causes the water-soluble vitamins, including vitamins C and B and folate, to leach out into the water, warns Healthline.

Why do you soak broccoli in salt water? ›

Removing Cabbage Worms with Salt Water

If you're making organic or home-grown broccoli, you may be concerned about worms in the florets. To be safe, soak the florets in a brine solution. Worms tend to live in the florets, where there are plenty of places to hide.

Do you put broccoli in cold water or boiling water? ›

Bring a large pot of water with salt to boil and fill a large bowl with cold water and ice. Lower the broccoli florets into the boiling water and cook for 2 to 3 minutes. The broccoli should be bright green and tender-crisp.

Why should broccoli be drained after boiling? ›

Drain immediately after boiling to prevent the broccoli from becoming mushy. If you like broccoli a little crunchier, boil for 2 minutes. Is boiled broccoli still healthy? Boiled vegetables do lose some nutrients in the cooking water, namely water-soluble vitamins like vitamin C and folate.

Does broccoli need salt? ›

For serving, a simple sprinkling of salt might be all you need, especially if the broccoli is accompanying an entrée with a bold sauce. If you'd like to add more flavor, try a pat of butter, a sprinkle of salt and pepper, a squeeze of lemon, or hollandaise sauce.

Should I salt water when boiling vegetables? ›

For vegetables, every hundred ounces of water takes three ounces of salt (30g per liter). Pasta and grains take only one ounce (10g per liter). As I explain in my article on green vegetables, salting water generously preserves a vegetable's flavor and nutrients.

How to cook broccoli without getting soggy? ›

If you don't have a steamer, you can simply put the broccoli directly into an inch of boiling water, but keep a close eye on it and remove the broccoli from the pan as soon as it's done so it doesn't get waterlogged.

What does salt water do to vegetables? ›

The oozing out water shrinks and kills the bacterial cells and destroys their presence on the vegetables. Hence, soaking the vegetables in salt water not only removes the pesticides and insecticides, but it also kills the bacteria and bugs present on them.
