Payment Methods

There are many ways to pay your educational costs, and the links below provide helpful information on the most common methods for payment. Please note that credit or debit cards cannot be usedto make payment on tuition and fees. If you'd like more information on payment policies, please visit the Bursar's website.

After you have completed your financial aid application (i.e., submitted the FAFSA, Profile, and any additional documents we request), we will prepare your financial aid offer. Your financial aid will most likely consist of work study, loans, and/or grants. If you're not sure whether you have completed your financial aid application, check your "to-do list" in DukeHub to see if you have any outstanding to-do items.

If you qualify for grant aid, it will automatically be "accepted" on your behalf and applied to your bill.

If you would like to take advantage of the federal loans in your aid offer, you will need to log into DukeHub and accept them. Once you accept them and complete the entrance counseling and your promissory note (if needed), your loans will automatically disburse to your student account.

Work studyhelps you find a job, and as you work hours, your earnings will be paid to you in your direct deposit bank account (not your Duke student account). You don't need to find a work-study job if you don't want one. We have automatically "accepted" your work-study offer in your financial aid in order to give you access to the Student Employment site, but this does not require you to do anything. If you do not pursue a job, you will have effectively "declined" your work-study offer.

Duke partners with Nelnet to allow students and families to pay their bill in monthly installments. To learn more, please visit the Bursar's website.

If you need to take out student or parent loans to help pay your bill, we can help. Please visit our Loans page for helpful resources about educational loans.

Payments for Duke charges can be made by check. For information on where to send your check and the required information to submit with it, please visit the Bursar's website.

If your charges will be paid by an employer or other organization by check, payments should be sent to:

Duke University Cashiering
114 South Buchanan Boulevard
Bay 8, Room B-103
Box 90759
Durham, NC 27708-0759

If your employer or other organization requires a copy of your bill, pleaseclick here for information regarding sponsored billing.

Please Note:If you receive need-based aid from Duke, your aid will include work study and possibly a student loan. Any non-Duke scholarship you receive will first replace the loans and work study you were offered and will not automatically reduce your bill. If you receive more in outside scholarships than the total loan and workstudy you were offered, the additional amount will reduce the need-based Duke grant or scholarship. For more information, see our policy on outside scholarships.

Payment Deadlines

Tuition and fees are due before the start of each term, at the beginning of January and August. Please see theBursar websitefor more specific billing information.

Bills for your student account are prepared on a regular basis and made available to you electronically onDukeHub. You will receive an e-mail each time a new e-bill is ready for you to review onDukeHub. You can find a detailed billing schedule on theBursar website.

"How can I see my child's bill and financial information?"

In order for parents (or other individuals) to have access to their child's bill and other information, the student will need to sign their parents up for "guest" or "proxy" access. Because of FERPA and privacy regulations, our office can't sign parents up for this; the student has to do it.

Please visit the SISS website below for instructions on how to grant "proxy access."

How to Grant Proxy Access

Understanding your bill and student account

Duke students can view information about their bill and student account in two ways: the monthly billing statement and the live account balance in DukeHub (seen on the "What I Owe" or "Account Activity" screens).

Charges will appear as positive numbers, and financial aid and payments will show as negative numbers that reduce your balance. Scroll to the current term and view the amount at the bottom of that term to see your current balance.

  • Charges show as positive amounts, and payments (or financial aid) appear as negative amounts
  • Undergraduate charges nearly always include:
    • Tuition
    • Fees (health, recreation, activity, student services)
  • And may also include:
    • Housing and dining, if living on campus
    • Fees for courses that carry an additional charge
    • Miscellaneous charges such as flex, additional dining points, parking permits/tickets, etc.
    • FLEX points may not be on your bursar account until 7-10 days after you purchase them
  • If your balance is larger than expected, check to see if all the aid and payments appear in the current term's transaction summary. If something you expected doesn't display, check your financial aid to-do list to make sure you have completed all your requirements for financial aid

Once a semester begins, we recommend using the "Account Activity" or "What I Owe" screen in DukeHub to view current charges and your live account balance. Your monthly Bursar bill is a snapshot of a point in time and will be out of date as soon as new charges or aid are applied.

"Will I receive a refund?"

If your account has been overpaid, or if you have financial aid in excess of your charges from Duke, you may be eligible for a refund. Keep in mind:

  • A refund appears as a charge to your student account to offset the credit balance.
  • Duke issues refunds by direct deposit. If you haven’t already done so, please fill out a direct deposit authorization in DukeHub. To learn more, please visit the Bursar's website below.
